strpbrk in C

Purpose of strpbrk()

strpbrk() is one of the inbuilt string function in c programming which is used to return a string str1 from a character that matches any character specified in a string str2.

How strpbrk() Works

The following diagram clearly illustrate the working principle of strpbrk() inbuilt string function in C.

strpbrk() in c

In the above diagram strpbrk() takes two parameters say str1 and str2. Both parameters are string. Here str2 contains a and n. Now strpbrk will scan the string str1 to find any possible occurance of a or n. Hopefully Denmark contains n thus strpbrk returns nmark

Syntax - strpbrk()

  • strpbrk() function accepts two parameters say str1 and str2
  • Both parameters are string.
  • To use strpbrk() inbuilt string function in C, we need to declare #include<string.h> header file.
Syntax
strpbrk(str1, str2);

C Program - strpbrk()

Let us work through strpbrk() function. In the following program we will search for the first occurance of n or a in Denmark.

c-using-strpbrk.c
#include <stdio.h>
#include<string.h>
int main()
{
char str1[] = "Denmark";
char str2[]= "an";
char *res;
res = strpbrk(str1, str2);
printf("%s",res);
return 0;
}
nmark

Note:

The above program prints the output if any of a characters in str2 present in the source string otherwise it does not print any output.

C Program - Without strpbrk()

Here we will write a program to search for the first occurance of n or a in Denmark without using any inbuilt string functions.

c-without-strpbrk.c
#include <stdio.h>
#include<string.h>
int main()
{
char str1[20] = "Denmark";
char str2[5] = "an";
int len1, len2, i, j, k;
for(len1 = 0; str1[len1] !='\0';len1++)
{
// to find a length of string str1
}
for(len2=0; str2[len2] != '\0';len2++)
{
// to find a length of string str2
}
for(i = 0 ; i < len1; i++)
{
for(j = 0; j < len2; j++)
{
if(str1[i] == str2[j])
{
for(k = i; str1[k]!= '\0'; k++)
printf("%c",str1[k]);
return 0;
}
}
}
return 0;
}
nmark

Note:

The above program looks verbose but yields same the result.

Did You Know?

strpbrk() is case sensitive.
