C Typedef

In C, the typedef(keyword) allows the programmers to define the new data type name by using existing data types in C. The existing data types are int, char, float, arrays, structures and so on. There is no new data type is produced, rather than a new data type name is created. Once a new data type name is created, then variables, structures, arrays can be declared and initialized in terms of the new data type name. The keyword typedef helps to increase the clarity in C programs.

C program - Typedef

Lets code typedef and have some fun.

typedef.c
#include <stdio.h>
int main()
{
typedef int rectangle; //creating new data type name rectangle using typedef
rectangle length, breadth, area;//declaring variables using new data type name rectangle
printf("\nEnter length and breath of the rectangle ");
scanf("%d %d ", &length, &breadth);
area = length * breadth;
printf("\nArea = %d ", area);
return 0;
}
  • Enter length and breadth of the rectangle 5 2
  • Area = 10

Note:

In the program, we have declared rectangle as an integer data type by using the keyword typedef. The variables like length, breadth and area are under the type name rectangle.

C program - Creating New Data Type

Lets code typedef and have some fun.

typedef-1.c
#include <stdio.h>
int main()
{
typedef struct {
char name[30];
int rollNo;
}list;
list stud1; //Declaring variable using new struct data type name list
printf("\nEnter the name of the student : ");
scanf("%s", stud1.name);
printf("\nEnter the Roll number of the student : ");
scanf("%d",&stud1.rollNo);
printf("\nName: %s \nRoll No.: %d ", stud1.name, stud1.rollNo);
return 0;
}
  • Enter the name of the student :Jiju
  • Enter the Roll number of the student :16

Note:

In the above c program, we have declared list as an structure type by using the keyword typedef. The stud1 is the variable of structure data type.
